Congressus XIV Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum

First Circular, May 2023

Dear colleagues,

Since 1960 the International Congress for Finno-Ugric Studies (Congressus Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum, CIFU) has been organized every five years. The last congress was originally scheduled for 2020, but took place two years later, in August 2022 in Vienna, due to the COVID pandemic. At the meeting of the International Committee it was decided that the next congress will take place in Tartu and will return to the original schedule. Thus, CIFU XIV in Tartu will take place on August 18–23, 2025. Tartu also hosted the congress 25 years ago in 2000.

The Institute of Estonian and General Linguistics at the University of Tartu (https://keel.ut.ee/), with its Department of Finno-Ugric Studies, invites all interested colleagues to this important international event in Finno-Ugric (Uralic) studies. The programme will consist of plenary papers, symposia, and general session papers.

In this first circular, we invite you to submit proposals for symposia via e-mail to cifu14@ut.ee by October 31, 2023. The proposals must include a brief description of the symposium (1–2 pages) and the name and contact information of the main organizer(s). The proposals must be written in English. Note that the actual talks at the congress can be given in other traditional languages of Finno-Ugric studies as well. Within the symposia, it will be up to each symposium organizer to decide what languages can be used. Symposium organizers will be responsible for the evaluation of the abstracts submitted for their symposium. It’s also up to them whether they edit an independent symposium publication; no publication containing all papers of the Congress is planned. Contributions from any area within Finno-Ugric/Uralic studies in the wide sense are welcome.

The conference website at cifu14.ut.ee will be continuously updated, and new information (further circulars, call for papers, information about the conference venue, programme, registration and conference fees etc.) will be made available there.

We look forward to seeing you in Tartu in 2025!

Gerson Klumpp

Professor of Finno-Ugric Studies
